Chinese Lenses for Nikon Z

Post: # 51Post JohnK »

In recent years, the photography world has witnessed a significant shift with the rise of Chinese manual focus lenses, particularly for Nikon Z cameras. These lenses have gained popularity among photographers for their unique combination of affordability, high-quality optics, and distinctive character. Nikkor lenses for the Z system all allow the camera to automatically correct for aberrations. I feel this makes for digitally over sharpened images. Nikon can't apply these corrections with third party lenses that have no electronic connection to the cameras and you therefore get a more naturally look. Other reasons to opt for these brands include:

Affordability and Accessibility
One of the most compelling reasons for the rise of Chinese manual focus lenses is their affordability. Renowned brands like Zhongyi (Mitakon), Laowa (Venus Optics), and 7Artisans have made a name for themselves by offering high-quality lenses at a fraction of the cost of their Western and Japanese counterparts. This affordability has opened up new opportunities for photographers, particularly hobbyists and those on a budget, to experiment with different focal lengths and types of lenses without breaking the bank.

High-Quality Optics
Despite their lower price point, many Chinese manual focus lenses boast impressive optical performance. Companies like Laowa have produced lenses that are praised for their sharpness, minimal distortion, and excellent build quality. For instance, the Laowa 15mm f/4 Wide Angle Macro, compatible with Nikon Z cameras, has received accolades for its ability to capture stunning macro shots with minimal chromatic aberration and distortion. Such lenses provide photographers with tools to achieve professional-quality images without the premium price tag.

Unique Lens Character
Chinese manual focus lenses often bring a unique character to images that is distinct from the clinical sharpness of modern autofocus lenses. Many photographers appreciate the vintage feel, unique bokeh, and subtle imperfections that these lenses can produce. The Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster series, for example, is known for its ultra-fast apertures and dreamy bokeh, making it a favorite among portrait photographers. This distinctiveness adds an artistic flair to photographs that many photographers find appealing.

Compatibility with Nikon Z Cameras
The introduction of the Nikon Z mirrorless system has been a game-changer for many photographers. With its large-diameter mount and short flange distance, the Nikon Z system is highly adaptable to a wide range of lenses, including those from Chinese manufacturers. Companies like 7Artisans have capitalized on this by producing lenses specifically designed for the Nikon Z mount, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance. The compact size and lightweight design of many Chinese manual focus lenses also complement the portability of the Nikon Z camera system.

Embracing Manual Focus
In an era dominated by advanced autofocus systems, the manual focus experience offered by these lenses provides a refreshing change for many photographers. Manual focus encourages a more deliberate and engaged approach to photography, allowing photographers to slow down and carefully compose their shots. This hands-on experience can lead to a deeper connection with the craft and a greater sense of satisfaction with the resulting images.

Innovation and Diversity
Chinese lens manufacturers are not just replicating existing designs; they are also pushing the boundaries of innovation. Laowa, for example, has introduced unique lenses like the 24mm f/14 2X Macro Probe, which offers an unprecedented perspective for macro photography. Such innovation and diversity in lens offerings give photographers access to creative tools that were previously unavailable or prohibitively expensive.

The rise of Chinese manual focus lenses for Nikon Z cameras is a testament to the evolving landscape of photography. These lenses offer an enticing blend of affordability, high-quality optics, and unique character, making them an attractive option for photographers of all levels. As Chinese manufacturers continue to innovate and refine their lens offerings, it is likely that their presence in the photography market will continue to grow, providing photographers with even more exciting and accessible tools to explore their creative visions.

I've been using the Laowa 90mm f2.8 macro for a few months and am very impressed. Not only does it give 2:1 macro capability, but it's also a great lens for portraits.
